La Fédération Internationale de l’Arte Photographique

FIAP, as Simon explained, is an international body that promotes the Art of Photography. It takes the form of an affiliation of national photographic bodies rather than having individual membership.

These national bodies such as the IPF and their regional members e.g. Tallaght Camera Club run competitions called salons. Individuals from camera clubs across the world submit entries into these salons in order to gain FIAP disitinctions. Simon set himself the task of obtaining the AFIAP, (Artiste) and EFIAP (Excellence) distinctions and successfully fulfilled the onerous requirements though the time restrictions mean he has yet to receive either distinction.

Fortunately for us, Simon has summarised the complicated entry requirements and devised a spreadsheet to keep a record of the various acceptances, countries, awards etc. and is happy for members to make use of it should they wish to have a go themselves. The slides from Simon’s excellent presentation can be found on the club’s Google Drive which you can access by following this link.

Many, many thanks to Simon for sharing his experience with us and for making the resources available. And of course a huge congratulations from all at the club on his success in attaining both the AFIAP and EFIAP in what must be a record time!
