Deconstructing the Photograph; Simon Hill, BA MA MDes ABIPP EFIAP FRPS FRGS.

Once again we were delighted to welcome Simon Hill, the current President of the RPS and member of Clonakilty Camera Club, back to give a talk to the members. We came away inspired and better able to evaluate our own photography and that of others and also charged to take a single photo…..

Simon began his talk by explaining that as President of the RPS he regularly writes a blog under the heading of President’s News. Each post has been based upon a photograph and then finding connections between the photo and an historical event or period, various artifacts or more recent events.

Simon then described three ‘lockdown’ projects he’d undertaken; a collaborative cookbook, photos of skies and most recently walking every public footpath in the Forest of Knaresborough and photographing all the signs indicating the paths along the way.

Simon followed up this leading a discussion on how to deconstruct a photograph which, if done assiduously, will not only help us understand other people’s photos but improve our own photography.

The evening concluded with Simon setting the members a challenge to be completed over the summer. Members can view details of this and a summary of Simon’s notes on deconstructing a photograph in a pdf here.
