Club Annual Exhibition
Clonakilty Camera Club is holding its 3rd Annual exhibition of members’ work in the Round Tower at the Celtic Ross Hotel, Rosscarbery, Co. Cork.
The exhibition was opened by Lord David Puttnam on Friday July 9th at 8.30 pm, and was well attended by club members and the public.
In his opening speech, Lord Puttnam congratulated members for the high standard of images on display and talked of the beautiful quality of slanting soft light in West Cork.
He also mentioned the empowering nature of the image and the way it can generate an immediate positive response. “Without an image, an appeal for help to a disaster becomes so much more difficult”. He is a former Chairman of UNICEF.
He also spoke of his father, who was an ace Associated Press staff photographer and also War Office Official Photographer for the British Government during WWII.
See ......... here to search for Lt L Puttnam images in the Archives of the Imperial War Museum, London.
David Puttnam was agent to some of the world’s foremost portrait and fashion photographers, namely, David Bailey, Brian Duffy and Richard Avedon.
In 2000 Lord Puttnam was awarded the Centennial Medal by the Royal Photographic Society. Only 3 Centennial awards exist.
For 10 years he was the Chairman of the British National Museum of Photography, Film and Television.
It was a real honour for the Club to have him open this years exhibition and we thank him for making the time to do so.
The Clonakilty Camera Club was founded in 1981, and currently has about forty members. While most are amateurs some are practicing professionals. There is a great tradition of the accomplished helping those less skilled, so the standard is continually rising.
The photos in the exhibition both reflect the life and landscape of West Cork, but also there are scenes and portraits from further afield. The photographs are for sale at a very reasonable €90 each
There was a raffle on the night and all proceeds went to COPE Foundation.
