Longford Digital Arts – winner!

We have a winner amongst us. Again. Wow!

Congratulations to Simon for winning ‘Expressions’ which is Ireland’s largest dedicated international art photography portrait competition and exhibition, attracting hundreds of professional and accomplished amateur photographers from across the world.

The press release from Longford Digital Arts goes on to say…

…..The emphasis of the competition is on art photography where the judges look to select 50 finalists with portraits of a high technical standard that are also creative, express an identity and communicate a concept or narrative. The portrait photographs may be imaginative interpretations or re-workings of traditional ‘norms’ of portrait photography, or they may be images that demonstrate the deconstruction or innovative application of the technical ‘rules’ of photographic portraiture. The panel of judges included our guest judge for 2017, Mateusz Kowalski, the Warsaw-based photographer and book designer. Mateusz graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and works mainly with a large format camera and black-and-white film.

The ultimate winner of the competition is chosen by the panel of judges from the 50 finalists and is announced at a prestigious event held in Longford, Ireland. EXPRESSIONS 2017 is the third year that this internationally significant competition has been staged and the 2017 winner is the UK and Ireland based photographer and designer, Simon Hill, whose photograph of two cemetery groundsmen was taken as part of an on-going portrait project that aims to document “England in Particular” – the title of a book by the Common Ground Trust. Taken at York Cemetery in northern England, the black-and-white photograph is a portrait of cemetery groundsmen Oliver Clarke and Rob Harris.

Simon lives and works between England and Ireland but his photograph projects take him around the world. When at home in West Cork, Simon is an active member of Clonakilty Camera Club where he is always keen to encourage fellow members with his technical and creative expertise and infectious enthusiasm for photography.

Simon was recently interviewed about his thoughts on winning the competition and the influences behind, and inspiration for, his winning photograph.
